How to sell a boat in Austin
A practical plan for pricing, photographing and listing your boat around Austin and Lake Travis.

Start with the boat you actually have
Gather the year, manufacturer, model, engine details, hours if documented, and maintenance receipts. Keep the hull identification number separate from the TX registration number. A painted registration number identifies the registration; it is not the hull serial number. Check the information against your paperwork before publishing the listing.
Describe the boat’s present condition. A recent service receipt is useful evidence; a general statement that everything is perfect is less useful. Explain any known repair needs and include the trailer only if it is part of the offer. Buyers should be able to understand what your asking price includes.
Build an asking-price range
Compare boats of a similar type, year and length. Record differences in equipment, engine hours, condition and trailer inclusion. Asking prices are advertised expectations, not evidence of completed sale prices. A free Topjib estimate can help frame the comparison when enough similar listings are available.
Choose a price you can explain using the boat’s condition and the current alternatives. If you change the price, keep the history consistent across your listings. A clear change is more useful to buyers than a new listing with conflicting information.
Make the next step easy
Photograph the whole boat, cockpit, engine area, upholstery and any visible damage. Say which city or lake is relevant without promising a transferable slip. Use the Contact Seller form to keep the initial inquiry organized. Before a sale, check the current TPWD transfer instructions and make sure the person signing has authority to sell.
