TX registration number vs. HIN: two numbers, two purposes
Understand the painted bow number and the hull serial number before searching or claiming a boat record.

The number you can see from the dock
The TX registration number is displayed on the bow under Texas placement requirements. It is commonly visible in listing photos, although angles, reflections and image quality can make individual characters uncertain. Reading a number from a distant photo should not turn an uncertain character into a confirmed match.
Topjib records TX numbers separately from hull identification numbers. A clear TX number can help find a registration record; it does not on its own verify the seller’s ownership or the boat’s present location.
The hull identification number
The HIN is the hull serial number. It is typically found at the stern and often requires a close-up view or the vessel paperwork to read. It is not the large painted bow number. Older records can also contain legacy serial formats that need to be described honestly rather than forced into a modern format.
When searching a boat, compare the recorded number with the actual boat and the relevant documents. A marketplace photo and a government record can support a match, but a disagreement should be reviewed before the two records are connected.
Search and claim with care
Topjib supports searches by recorded TX registration number or HIN. Some boats will have only one number available. Claiming a page requests a review of your association with that boat; it does not change a TPWD record or replace the official title-transfer process.
